“I lived with Karim Idriss in the student halls of residence. We shared a room, so we were in constant discussion. Meanwhile, Mostafa Derkaoui, who was married and had a son, was entitled to an apartment in town, and so we met at his place. Krimou also lived in the student residence. Mostafa’s place, as usual—since he continued the practice in Morocco for a long time afterwards—was an open house. It was a welcoming place, a place where we all felt at home, where we could drink, eat, and let our ideas develop, unfettered. We had three extraordinary Syrian friends with whom we had very rich political discussions.”
